Learning Intentions

To identify the mountains of Ireland on a map.

To know how people use mountains for recreation.

To discuss the work of Mountain rescue teams and compare with Coast Guards.

To identify some features of the worlds highest mountains.

In Ireland most of the mountains are near the coast and the middle of the country is quite flat. An area of high land is said to be a mountain if it is over 600 metres high. Ireland has lots of mountains but only three of them are over 1,000 metres high.These three mountains are in the Macgillycuddy`s Reeks in County Kerry.The highest of these is Carrauntoohil. If Carrauntoohil we’re placed beside Mount Everest it would look really small.Mount Everest is more than eight times higher!
